Just a couple examples of how some Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOL) store and organize their LEGO pieces.  How each user sorts and stores their pieces is primarily based on just how many pieces the builder has.  Depending how much physical space you have, some general guidelines for sorting are:

  • A few (<12) LEGO sets:  single storage case, like 12 gallon folding-lid crates (http://www.amazon.com/Akro-Mils-66486-Plastic-Attached-Sandstone/dp/B004NSUV4A/).
  • More than a 12 gallon folding-lid crate:  This is where builders will usually start sorting pieces by color, but not usually by part.
  • 12 gallon folding-lid crate single color:  For me - this is where I start separating pieces by BOTH color and by part.  To save some money, storing the separated parts in Zip-Lock bags is sufficient.
  • 2+ 12 gallon crates:  Once you get at least a 2x 12 gallon crates, for convenient access to your parts, consider buying those plastic drawer “towers” (as seen in these pics), separated by color and by part.

Additional tips:

  • By the time you have tens of gallons of LEGO, you can usually separate and store parts by color and part.
  • For bigger “brick” pieces (e.g. standard 2x4), I use the plastic drawer carts, and for smaller “specialized” pieces, I use those 30, 45, or 60 drawer small hardware cabinets; such as those made by Akro-Mils:  http://www.amazon.com/Akro-Mils-10164-Plastic-Storage-Hardware/dp/B000LDH3JC
