After almost 7 years of being “on hold,” I am finally getting the opportunity to bring brickfan.com back!
Back in the summer of 2005, I remember talking to anyone who would listen that a fan-based site celebrating LEGO was perfect, and that brickfan.com would be the start of a great site. My idea on how to make the site an actual business was to sell DRM (digital rights managed) protected PDF building instructions of custom models. An example of a car design I really liked, the “Outlaw” and the “DeMichetti.”
Well - I got pretty good at using LDraw - an amazing LEGO 3D program, and brushed up my Photoshop and Illustrator skills… with the help of some former colleagues, we got the original site up and running in September of 2005…
Long story short - I couldn’t find a good CMS (content management system), so for a non-technical guy like me, making updates was painful. Oh, and I really didn’t know how to “monetize” the site - I think I only sold about a dozen building instructions - so working on it full time, was uh… sigh, let’s just say there were several reasons the site went “on hold.”
In late 2007, Facebook changed everything - especially for me. I connected immediately to the ten-zillion LEGO friends I know IRL (in real life) and then connected to AFOLs (Adult Fans of LEGO), almost at a geometric rate. Facebook has served as a wonderful outlet for me to post pics of LEGO, tell friends about upcoming sales - but in the back of my head… hmmm… still have the brickfan.com domain… sigh…
In 2010, a co-worker told me about tumblr and how easy it was to create a blog. Sure enough, FTW (for the win), almost like having an “easy” button - brickfan.com is back!
Happy Holidays - hope to see you all in 2012!
